Edo-Tokyo Open Architectural Museum

Tokyo Tatemono en

Located in western Tokyo, the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum is filled with beautifully restored historic buildings with great cultural value that are impossible to preserve at their original location. From Edo period to earlier Showa era (17th-20th century), showcasing the variety of architectural styles and Japanese life styles: residents of wealthier farmer’s houses, foreign minister’s mansion, Early Showa’s stores with residence called “Kanban Kenchiku” style.

You can see the real-life buildings from the anime films like “Spirited Away” and “Totoro”. The acclaimed anime producer, Hayao Miyazaki, visits here sometime for inspiration.

Even I, a Japanese, enjoyed taking over 300 photos and was immersed in nostalgia.
It’s a little far from the center of Tokyo, but if you’ve visited Asakusa and Harajuku, this may be your next place.

By the way, a commentary by Okada Toshio for “Spirited away”, HAKU used to be Chihiro’s older brother and he sacrificed his life to save Chihiro. It’s very persuasive.
Okada Toshio: a Japanese producer, critic, writer and professor and  Self-proclaimed king of Otaku king.
